Strong Friend Travis Young: Redemption Story
Courage to come back and make a difference
I first met Travi in 2013 while I was in Australia and he was still running Keep it Young. I was working with the S&C coaches of some of Australia's high profile teams and associations - Aussie Ladies Rugby 7s, the High Performance Centre for Surfing, the Roosters and the Sharks.
Travi let me train in his gym. He was instantly hospitable, generous with his time and knowledge, encouraging and kind. At the time I had no idea about the extreme internal challenges he was facing.
It just goes to show that you can't always tell when people are struggling and hurting. We who struggle on the inside are often the best at putting on a "brave" face.
Travis is the quintessential family man and always striving to help people make a positive change.
I have immense respect for how far he has come. He teaches us all to look after ourselves and each other.
Thank you, Travis, for sharing your story with us.
Tell me about yourself
My name is Travis, I'm 29 and father to 2 boys, Jett Danger and Ace Rocket.
I have been a Personal Trainer since I was 19. I owned my own business with a business partner for 6 years but that ended due to basically myself having a drug problem. I went to rehab in Thailand for a month and came back vowing to change my life and help change those around me.
I started my own business again calling it Reborn Fitness club, same training style as my previous business Keep it Young, but this time I was also focused on mental health.
Having suffered from depression and anxiety, I understood the struggles of mental illness but in return I understood the benefits of fitness to combat these illnesses.
I have, since returning from Rehab, been able to go from zero clients to 250+ in 17months, completing 5 fitness Challenges and helping my clients lose over 2000kg of body fat but also helping people create healthy lifestyles.
I hope to continue to positively impacting as many people's lives as possible and become the best gym in Australia for getting result for my clients, not just physically but mentally also.
You have overcome some big challenges
I'm a recovering Drug and gambling Addict. That was, and still is, my greatest challenge that I still battle everyday.
Not that I struggle to stay away from drugs or gambling but I can never touch any drugs or alcoholic beverages again if I want to live the happy, healthy life that I want to live. So that is a day 2 day battle.
I believe I will never drink, do drugs or gamble ever again simply because none of those elements coincide with my life goals.
I am 100% clean and sober and have been for 17months.
Tell me more about your business
My Business is Reborn Fitness Club and besides, my family, it is basically all I focus on.
I have made a business that helps not only my clients but my staff too, to bring out their best possible self.
As a team we constantly work on personal development and bettering our business knowledge.
As a team we are in a great position where we are open to each other and always helping each other.
I hope to grow together and take the Challenge’s online to reach and help as many people as possible.
What prompted you to go into the fitness industry?
I was always good at sport and always loved it so the fitness side was always a natural thing for myself but soon after my first few results where my clients hit their goal and seeing them change as a person for the better, being more happy and confident within their own skin, is what made me realise this is what I wanted to do for life.
Nothing more satisfying or rewarding then seeing someone smile after seeing their results.
Tell me about your favourite Success Story at work?
We had a young man called Jordan come into the gym to do a 8 week challenge. He had a motor bike accident a couple years before where he broke his back and multiple other bones in his body.
He was extremely concerned that he wouldn't even be able to participate in the majority of the sessions but signed up anyway in the hope that Reborn could change his life.
After 8 weeks he lost 10.2kg of body fat and put on a 1kg of muscle which is UNBELIEVABLE considering he was only 70kg to start but what the real AMAZING results was his change mentally.
He was HAPPIER.
Physically, he became one of the fittest if not the fittest person in the gym. He had completely changed himself not only physically but mentally - that was the greatest success I have seen. (And still to this day he comes in and smashes out every work out-his life is completely changed)
What do you like most about working in this industry?
Being able to help and CHANGE peoples lives for the better
Who’s your inspiration in health and fitness?
My Staff. Each and everyone of them are talented in something different and every day I'm inspired by them.
And in the industry?
I don’t have a inspiration in my industry. I am inspired by athletes who challenge themselves and the one who stands upt for me is CONOR MCGREGOR.
Tell me about your sports and fitness background
I have played Rugby League since I was 4. Never reaching great heights but was always competitive as I only played 1st grade locally or down the coast from where I live.
I started training in the gym when I was 16 and loved it instantly.
I love most sports and have tried pretty much everything but I am drawn to team sports. I love the camaraderie and mateship that team sports bring.
I have also represented Australia for 7 years in Oztag.
What about your personal training regime?
I train in my gym 5-6 times a week with a combination of weights program and a cardio program which changes every 4-6 weeks.
Any advice to people wanting to start their fitness journey?
It's not an overnight success, it's about consistently training, ticking the needle over 1 step at a time.
